OiNK

The death of OiNK isn’t old news. In fact I wrote about it way back in October. However, soon after the event happened, this blog post was authored. It’s been on my to read list for quite some time as it’s very extensive. I finally managed to sneak some time to read it today. Well worth it.

Hockey, Doom and NYPD

Two nights ago I watched the NY Rangers v. NY Islanders at the Garden. Great game, but the Rangers goalie just isn’t what he should be. He has been the difference in these games lately. And by no means is playing like he’s the highest paid goalie in the league. The Rangers are scoring more than 3 goals a game as of late, but when the other guy on the end of the rink isn’t holding up team… it’s difficult to win games.

It was cool to see an OT, and then go into a Shoot out. I’ve never seen that before. It was made even more dramatic when the typical 3 shots of a shoot out left it even and it went to 6 a side. In the end the Islanders took the win, but the Rangers really should have been able to bring this one home in regulation. They out shot the Islanders, and let 2 very weak goals get away from them. Annoying. Great game of hockey nonetheless.

After the game, Sheri and I went to go get the car from the lot… this ended up being a 30 minute wait because the idiot attendant broke the damn key in the car under mine! Yes, under. We stack cars here in NYC. So they finally got the damn thing out of the way so we could go eat some food. Both of us were starving.

I didn’t get home from the game until about 12:30am. Long night, but fun.

Last night I went to see Weedeater. Or at least, I tried, again. The last show got canceled because their van broke down on the way here. Lovely. Last night’s show got changed about 2 days before because the original venue got shut down. Again, lovely. Last night, the show started late. Awesome. And 2 of the 5 bands were no-shows. Damn. About about half way through the fifth song of the night by Weedeater, the manager comes to the stage, goes over to the guitarist, while making the kill signal (dragging his hand across his throat). Again, awesome. Apparently the NYPD thought the volume of the show was too loud.

Seriously. We were deep in the heart of the non-residential part of the financial district. At a bar the local Hell’s Angels hang at. And we’re too loud. Give me a break. I over heard the owner telling some random people he’s been there 25 years, and has never had the NYPD shut down a show from volume.

I guess Weedeater left their mark. But will they ever play in NYC again? Who knows. I would definitely have issues with coming here.

Photos soon.

Nine Inch Nails releases Ghost I-IV

nin-ghosts

This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as… something.

The team: Atticus Ross, Alan Moulder and myself with some help from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew and Brian Viglione. Rob Sheridan collaborated with Artist in Residence (A+R) to create the accompanying visual and physical aesthetic.

We began improvising and let the music decide the direction. Eyes were closed, hands played instruments and it began. Within a matter of days it became clear we were on to something, and a lot of material began appearing. What we thought could be a five song EP became much more. I invited some friends over to join in and we all enjoyed the process of collaborating on this.

The end result is a wildly varied body of music that we’re able to present to the world in ways the confines of a major record label would never have allowed – from a 100% DRM-free, high-quality download, to the most luxurious physical package we’ve ever created.

More volumes of Ghosts are likely to appear in the future.

Interesting to note, this album is released under the Creative Commons usage, not your normal copywritten material. Very innovative, still.
