Day One

Local time: 11:40am

My first full day here. Arrived in Brussels, and traveled to Gent. The trip was about 40 minutes, and with the GPS with European maps, it was amazingly easy. I spent most of my time walking around all of Gent and eating. I had a great fresh mozzarella sandwich, then a fresh raspberry tart, then a strawberry jam crepe, and a few cups of coffee to keep myself alert until it was time to sleep. Then, I finished the night off with some french fries with mayo. A great Belgian dish! I can not wait for patat oorlog in Holland.

Gent is a beautiful city, and difficult to imagine the layout when compared to the grid of NYC. There are only a handful of buildings about 10 stories, and most of those are churches. There is also a film festival which started the day I got here, and the city is packed with all sorts of fun and young people. There is also a university here with about 6 different schools.

It was nice to finally get some lengthy sleep. And, it was even more humorous to wake up to the new people who moved in downstairs fighting amazingly loud this morning. I did find it quite funny, probably because I had enough sleep and I didn’t mind the wake up call.

Today I’m off to Antwerp in the afternoon to meet up with Koen. Apparently his wife is fixing us dinner tonight, and then we’re going to the show at Trix. I’m really exciting about meeting and spending some time with him, as well as nervous since it’s the first time meeting him. But, I’m very excited about the concert as well!
