Last night I went to see Boris at Williamsburg Music Hall. I actually do like Boris’ music a lot, and was looking forward to the show. They did not disappoint, however, the opening act did. They even said, before they started, Boris is the ‘noise’ and we are the ‘silence’. Quiet was right, it nearly put me to sleep. Not exactly what you would want for an opening act.

I know other performers have done this (Nine Inch Nails toured with acts as Bauhaus, Death from Above 1979, Queens of the Stone Age and TV on the Radio), but, sometimes, I think it’s a bad idea. It almost hurts the opening acts, as the fans start shouting for them to wrap it up so the main act can get on the stage. Not necessarily what you would want when you play?

I remember the days when you would see a line up (Sausage, Rollins Band, and Faith No More) where the fans would be in all the bands they got to hear, regardless if they had before.

Last night was not the case.

I do not want to imply this people couldn’t play, they could. They were amazing, in fact. But, it’s not what I wanted to listen to when I was about to get amped to see Boris. It’s similar to taking AMBIEN CR before you to go a big meeting on the job. Not exactly how you want to get prepared for it.

Maybe I’m getting older, or more selective. Or both. But, I feel the mix of the musical lineups last night actually hurt both performances. In the end, I was yawning because I had to wait through some poetic ephemeral music I wasn’t really anticipating experiencing. It was nice to go home, and call it night.
