Trent Reznor: OiNK Was Better Than iTunes

Posted in Music by Nathan Lavertue

TR of NIN:

I’ll admit I had an account there and frequented it quite often. At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world’s greatest record store. Pretty much anything you could ever imagine, it was there, and it was there in the format you wanted. If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn’t the equivalent of that in the retail space right now. iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don’t feel cool when I go there. I’m tired of seeing John Mayer’s face pop up. I feel like I’m being hustled when I visit there, and I don’t think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc. Amazon has potential, but none of them get around the issue of pre-release leaks. And that’s what’s such a difficult puzzle at the moment. If your favorite band in the world has a leaked record out, do you listen to it or do you not listen to it? People on those boards, they’re grateful for the person that uploaded it — they’re the hero. They’re not stealing it because they’re going to make money off of it; they’re stealing it because they love the band. I’m not saying that I think OiNK is morally correct, but I do know that it existed because it filled a void of what people want.

Who Needs Designers

Posted in Friends, Work by Nathan Lavertue

Yes, who really needs designers?

Would be more entertaining if it weren’t true.

The man without a face

Posted in General Musing by Nathan Lavertue

This is slightly amusing, but also a bit odd and annoying.

Lately I’ve been forgotten about. Not in a rude or (hopefully) intentional way. And certainly not by the people who mean the most to me. It’s the people I meet and see through common friends.

Initially when it happened it didn’t even really register. So often you (myself included) meet people and don’t remember a face, or a name, or a time and place. But hopefully you remember some aspect of it so, when the other party builds the picture of the event, you can piece it together. I had this happen a few times and self-dubbed myself Not Nathan. For the fact people would ask me, “You’re not Nathan are you?”

Now it’s gotten a little annoying. Mainly because it’s happening more and more. And with people whom I’ve met multiple times. I end up feeling awkward because I remember then… shouldn’t that be a good thing? The other night this happened and I said hello to a friend and he looked at me like I was some rude asshole for breaking his conversation. I’ve meet this guy several times… to the point where I’ve had dinner with him. And seen his band play. Awkward. It happens to me more than I care to admit.

So, do I have that face? The one which no one can remember? You’d think having red hair would be something you notice or recall, but, seems that doesn’t even phase people anymore. Maybe I am just really uninteresting.

Weird.
